Course Description

This course explores the cognitive and neural foundations of language learning. It examines the factors that make language acquisition uniquely human and the reasons why, despite being such a complex process, language is acquired relatively easily during childhood. Finally, the course reflects on the application of this knowledge to second-language learning.

In this course, we'll continue building the foundations of Oral an Witten Expression and extend on ELT frameworks for reading and listenining comprehension (receptive skills). We'll learn more techniques, methods, and strategies to integrate these skills in our teaching practices. It is expected that by the end of the course, you'll be able to create lessons and develop teaching moments integrating the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).

This will be a theoretical-practical course where you will understand how the sound system of English works. Apart from dealing with pronunciation practices, you will also understand how phonological environments affect speech in American English (and other dialects, too). We'll go from the physical properties of consonant and vowels to their abstract application and representation in IPA transcriptions.

This is the fourth intensive English course designed to prepare future English language professionals in the development of their communicative competence, with a focus on intercultural understanding and respect for people's ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. A variety of topics will be addressed, including daily activities, travel, social interaction, and the media.

Furthermore, the course promotes the development of the four macro language skills (speaking, writing, listening, and reading) through a communicative approach. Students will learn intermediate-level structures, vocabulary, and discourse, using communicative methods and techniques to support their learning.

This is the second course of the Integrated English itinerary in which students are expected to sharpen their macro linguistic skills.
